Salt Flats Wedding Photos | Bonneville Salt Flats Utah Wedding Inspiration

Last night I met up with Darby and Bryan for their Salt Flats wedding photos—and let me tell you, it was magic. The Bonneville Salt Flats are one of the most surreal, otherworldly places you can get wedding or elopement photos taken in Utah (or honestly, the world). I’ve shot out here many times, but every session feels brand new depending on the season, weather, and light—and this one did not disappoint.

Clear Skies, Salt Crystal Formations & a Dreamy Sunset

Darby and Brian lucked out with an incredibly clear day, which made for some epic views and jaw-dropping light. In April, the Salt Flats can sometimes be covered in water, creating a gorgeous glassy reflection. But this time, they were totally dry—which meant we had all that beautiful salt crystallization and wild texture underfoot.

Dry Salt Flats might not give you the mirror-like reflection, but they do offer something equally breathtaking: detailed formations, wide-open skies, and a completely clean backdrop that lets couples totally pop in their photos.

Why I Love Drone Photos at the Salt Flats

One of my favorite ways to capture this location is with drone photography. From above, you can see the vast patterns and textures that make this place so unique. I often suggest couples lay down on the salt for a few shots—this not only highlights their attire in a really cool way, but it also puts the natural textures front and center.

Even if you don’t use a drone, getting overhead shots from a step stool or even lying down on the ground brings in that same visual interest. It’s all about creating a variety of visuals that make this location shine!

Planning Your Salt Flats Wedding or Elopement

If you’re thinking about getting Salt Flats wedding photos, here’s what you need to know:
    •    You can elope out here, or bring a few guests for a small wedding ceremony.
    •    You can also do bridals, engagements, or a first look session here—even if your wedding is happening in another state!
    •    It’s about 1.5 hours from Salt Lake City, and just outside of Wendover, Utah.
    •    There are no real facilities at the Salt Flats, so bring water, food, and know you’ll be out in the elements. Checking the weather and wind forecast is a must!
    •    There’s a live Salt Flats webcam you can use to check conditions in real time (click here)

Whether you’re chasing that glassy water effect or the detailed crystallized salt, both are equally stunning. You just need to time your session based on the current conditions—and that’s something I help all my couples plan for.

Where to Stay for a Bonneville Salt Flats Wedding

If you’re coming from out of town (and many people do!), here are a few places I recommend:

In Wendover (closest to the Salt Flats):
    •    Peppermill Resort
    •    Montego Bay Hotel & Casino
    •    Rainbow Hotel & Casino

In Salt Lake City (more high-end options):
    •    The Grand America Hotel
    •    Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City
    •    Little America Hotel
    •    Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City

All of these offer a more luxurious experience and are perfect for getting ready, winding down, or even hosting a small celebration before or after your shoot.

Why the Salt Flats Are Worth It

Honestly? The Bonneville Salt Flats are one of the most incredible wedding photo locations in the world. People fly in from all over just to have their photos taken here—and I don’t blame them. The wide open space, the colors, the textures, the sense of freedom… it’s all unmatched.

It might feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but what you get out of it is something so special: wedding photos that don’t look like anyone else’s.
