Canyonlands National Park Elopement
Your Canyonlands National Park Elopement: A Guide
If you’re dreaming of a wedding that’s bold, unforgettable, and a little bit adventurous, an elopement in Canyonlands National Park might just be the perfect fit. With its wild landscapes, massive canyons, and insane rock formations, Canyonlands offers an epic backdrop for couples looking for something unique. Whether you’re going for something super chill and intimate or you want a full-on adventure, this park will give you an experience like no other. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your elopement in Canyonlands National Park.
Is Canyonlands right for your elopement?
Cons:
1. Remote Location: Canyonlands is in a more secluded part of Utah, about 30 minutes from Moab. Travel can be tricky, especially for guests.
2. Weather: Summer heat can exceed 100°F, and winter temperatures can be cold, making timing important for comfort.
3. Limited Amenities: No wedding facilities within the park. You’ll need to plan for things like restrooms and food.
4. Permit and Regulations: A special use permit is required, and there are restrictions like no amplified music or large structures.
5. Accessibility: Some areas of the park can be difficult for guests with limited mobility.
6. Crowds: While there are secluded spots, the park can get crowded, especially during peak seasons.
Pros:
- Epic Scenery: With its stunning canyons, mesas, and rock formations, the park provides a jaw-dropping natural backdrop for your ceremony and photos.
- Privacy: The vastness of the park means there are plenty of secluded spots, especially if you go for an early morning or off-season wedding.
- Adventure: Perfect for couples who want to add adventure to their elopement. You can incorporate activities like hiking, rock climbing, or even a scenic helicopter ride.
- Iconic Photo Opportunities: From the dramatic Mesa Arch to the striking Island in the Sky, there are countless unique spots for breathtaking wedding photos.
- Stargazing: As a Dark Sky Park, Canyonlands offers some of the clearest skies in the country, ideal for an unforgettable night of stargazing after your ceremony.
- Variety of Outdoor Activities: Beyond the wedding, you can enjoy off-roading, river rafting, and even horseback riding, making it easy to create a fun and adventurous post-wedding itinerary.
When is best?
(March to May) and fall (September to November) are best for temperatures they are more mild, and you’ll avoid the intense summer heat and larger crowds.
I encourage sunrise elopements to further avoid crowds and optimize for best lighting for photos.
Where to get my permit
The couple will need to apply for the permit through the park which costs $185 as of Feb. 2025.
Island in the sky is the typical area they approve permits for. Shafer Canyon overlook permits up to 25 people, Green River Overlook permits 25, Grand View Point permits 25. At the Needles they permit Pothole Point for up to 15 people and Needles Group Campsite for up to 50 people at the Dutch oven group site.
They permit other locations on a case by case basis.
